Dalai Lama Meets Hopi 1979 In 1979, the Dalai Lama first came to the United States and met in LA with Hopi leaders (l to r) Earl Pela, Thomas Banyacya and David Monongye. Glen Canyon Dam Crack In 1981, we filmed "The Cracking of Glen Canyon Damn" and caught the moment when the legendary guerilla theater enviro action cadre Earth First! was born. Roberta Blackgoat, Relocation Resister In July 1986, the U.S. government threatened to forcibly relocate Navajos on Big Mountain in Arizona. Roberta Blackgoat refused to move. Davis Canyon, Utah In 1984, the U.S. government considered burying high level nuclear waste next to Canyonlands National Park. This inspired the Sacred Land Film Project's creation. Leadville Mine Waste We converted our film on water in the Colorado Rockies, "Downwind/Downstream" into "Poison in the Rockies" for the PBS series Nova in 1990. Native Americans of the Plains have long revered the tower as a ceremonial site, and know it as Lodge of the Bear (Mato Tipila to the Lakota). It became America's first National Monument in 1906. Filming Zuni Salt Gatherers After we finished "In the Light of Reverence," the Zuni Tribe invited us to make a short film to help them protect their sacred Salt Lake from a proposed coal stripming.
